Film People Stop Work for Wednesday

2004/07/13 Source

Directors, producers and other members of the local film industry will hold a one-day work stoppage today in protest over Possible Changes in the screen quota system that protects local films.
Organized by the civic group Film People for Alternative Measures, the production of all films in the nation have been suspended for the day. Preview screenings of films to take place have been rescheduled.

Instead, the film industry will demonstrate in protest of the government's recent decision to look into changing or reducing the screen quota. Currently, the system requires theaters to screen domestic films 40 percent of the time.

The group is also protesting the quota system being negotiated as part of a bilateral investment treaty between South Korea and the United States.

About 3,000 members of the film industry are expected to meet at Kwanghwamun, downtown Seoul, near the U.S. Embassy building at 2 p.m. today. From there, the group will march down the streets of Chongno and Namdaemun and gather at Myongdong Cathedral at 5 p.m.
