Film studies to be offered as elective at public schools

Public schools that offer an elective in film studies are set to appear across the nation beginning in the new school term. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism drew up a proposal for incorporating film studies into the curriculum and is collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development to realize the plan.
According to the plan, about 112 elementary, middle and high schools will establish film studies courses as an elective or an extracurricular activity.

The Culture Ministry has earmarked 1.5 billion won for the project and has been developing educational materials and teacher training programs to prepare for the move. Textbooks for the course are set to be published in February.

While music, art and drama classes have been part of the curriculum at public schools for a long time, film studies courses have not been available at public schools due to the lack of professional staff and proper educational equipment. As a result, Korean students have had to wait until college to encounter film studies for the first time.

"Compared to European countries that have taught film studies as an optional part of public education since the 1970s, Korea is only starting to catch up", said Seo In-sook, a professor at Sangmyung University.
"Young people who are used to moving images will gain a lot from learning how to see the world through movies and understanding various media".
