Filmmakers Blast Gov't's Film Aid Plan

The domestic film industry has blasted the government's follow-up measures on the planned cut of the screen quota.

Committee for the Protection of the Screen Quota Chairman Yang Ki-hwan and other filmmakers hit the Culture and Tourism Ministry's plan to provide subsidies to the movie industry "nonsense" and "insufficient" against the massive capital of Hollywood.

They also said the plan to raise 200 billion won in subsidies by levying an additional five-percent tax on movie tickets is tantamount to charging a special excise tax on moviegoers.

The government on Thursday announced that it will halve the screen quota to 73 days from July to speed up negotiations in the World Trade Organization and conclude free trade agreements.
