G-Dragon's Much-Hyped Collaboration Art Show Unveiled

2015/06/10 | 505 views | Permalink | Source

A collaborative art exhibit between the Seoul Museum of Art and G-Dragon of the K-pop group Big Bang was opened to the media on Monday.

As the first joint project involving a Korean art gallery and a pop star, "PEACEMINUSONE: Beyond the Stage" has already received a significant amount of attention.

The museum and YG Entertainment, G-Dragon's management agency, spent more than a year preparing the exhibit, which showcases more than 200 works from 14 teams. Both parties have evidently taken pains to ensure that the event is perceived as a serious art exhibition, and not dismissed as a K-pop promotional activity.

Most of the artworks on display are by young and new-media artists. The exhibit pays great attention to detail, including lighting, flow and finishing.

Ultimately, however, the move to bring a K-pop icon into an art museum has only partly succeeded. It is intended to show G-Dragon's music world through modern art works under the banner of "a different name of the word in G-Dragon's perception and imagination", but it seems as superficial as the title "PEACEMINUSONE".

G-Dragon said, "I came here as a small intermediary. I'm happy to be taken advantage of, as long as it means more people come to the gallery and enjoy art. If, in the process, they remember the title of a work or the name of an artist, what could be better than that?"

The exhibition runs until August 23.
