As global TV sales declined amid the coronavirus outbreak, Korean manufacturers were able to boost their market share.

According to market researcher Omdia on Wednesday, global TV sales volume shrank 7.7 percent on-year to 91.87 million sets in the first half and revenues 17.8 percent to US$39.8 billion.

A hoped-for fillip from the Tokyo Summer Olympics never happened because they had to be canceled.

Samsung accounted for 31.3 percent of global TV market share in money terms and sold 19.1 million TVs, up 0.3 percent on-year. In the ultra-large segment of more than 75 inch TVs, it grabbed more than 50 percent.

The company attributed the success to a better lineup of QLED TVs and aggressive online marketing during lockdown.

LG's share was 15.3-percent worth $6.78 billion. But in terms of sales volume it was overtaken by China's TCL, which makes cheap TVs, in the second quarter.
