Han Kang Longlisted for Man Booker Int'l Prize

Korean writer Han Kang has been longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize for her novel "The Vegetarian".

The 50,000-pound biennial award hosted in Britain goes to novels from across the world translated into English.

There are 13 writers on the longlist including Nobel laureates Orhan Pamuk and Kenzaburō Ōe.

The judges whittled down the longlist from 155 books from 12 countries.

"The Vegetarian" was published here in 2008 and consists of three narratives that around a woman who becomes a vegetarian due to a traumatic experience in her childhood and watches her family break down around her.

The novel was translated into English and published last year to critical acclaim, with the Guardian calling it "an extraordinary experience".

The shortlist of six books will be announced on April 13, and the winner on May 16.
