[HanCinema's Box Office Review] 2017.04.07 ~ 2017.04.09

"Beauty and the Beast" holds off "The Prison" to secure its fourth weekend at the top...

For the fourth straight weekend, Bill Condon's update on Disney's 1991 classic "Beauty and the Beast" (starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens) has remained Korea's film of choice. The 347,085 admissions (26.96%) it claimed over the weekend pushes its total tally in Korea now 4.6 million ($33.2 million), making it the highest-grossing foreign film of the year, as well as the third highest overall ("Confidential Assignment" and "The King" are one and two respectively). Worldwide, "Beauty and the Beast" has grossed nearly a billion dollars.

Nah Hyeon's crime film "The Prison" arrived a week after Condon's re-imagining and has remained in close second for the past three weeks (the gap between "Beauty and Beast" and "The Prison" has not been more than 150,000 admissions). Nah Hyeon's directorial debut claimed 19.92% of the sales (249,853 admissions), moving its total tally now to 2.6 million, or $19 million, and is also the fifth highest-grossing film of the year behind the Japanese hit "Your Name" (3.6 million).

Third and fourth when to two new foreign arrivals: the sci-fi horror flick "Life" by Daniel Espinosa, and Lee Yoon-ki's new drama "One Day" (starring Kim Nam-gil and Chun Woo-hee). "Life"-"We were better off alone"-had 647 screens from which to pool from and managed 18.71% (234,674) during its first weekend out, while Lee's latest claimed 8.42% (109,605) from 532 screens around the country. "One Day" is Lee's eight feature film; he previous works include "A Man and A Woman" (2015), "Come Rain Come Shine" (2011), and "My Dear Enemy" (2008).

Hollywood's remake of Masamune Shirow's "Ghost in the Shell" (starring Scarlett Johansson) fell two places to fifth. The film grabbed just over 20% of the sales last weekend (which was enough for a podium finish), but only managed 5.47% over this, its second weekend; those 68,722 admissions pushed "Ghost in the Shell"'s total ticket count to 735,284 ($5.3 million). Im Dae-woong's new horror was up next: from 452 screens, "House of the Disappeared" captured the interest of 61,906 filmgoers. Im's previous work includes "To Sir, With Love" (2006), a short story in the first "Horror Stories" anthology, and "The Guest" (a Korea-China co-production) is due for release later this year.

Yang Kyeong-mo-I's debut film "One Line", a crime drama starring Im Si-wan, Jin Goo, Park Byung-eun, Lee Dong-hwi and Kim Sun-young, moved three places down the order to settle in seventh with 3.85% of the sales (50,899 admissions), growing its bottom line now to $2.7 million (412,610 admissions). The Oscar-nominated "Hidden Figures" (based on Margot Lee Shetterly non-fiction book of the same name) added 42,378 to its total (3.35%), and the second weekend of April was rounded out by two new foreign flicks: "Patriots Day" and the Mexican-American animation "El Americano: The Movie". Peter Berg's "Patriots Day" is based on the Boston Marathon bombing and stars Mark Wahlberg, Kevin Bacon, John Goodman, and J. K. Simmons. From 374 screens, the film captured 36,906 admissions (2.79%), followed in tenth by "El Americano" with 14,396 from 288 screens.
