Bring me all the terrible crimes and cheese villains, because "Mystery Queen Season 2" is here, and it brings familiar and new faces into new and exciting adventures. Our beloved crime solving duo has evolved, and so have the cases they tackle. Ready for another round?
Season two of "Mystery Queen" continues to follow the adventures of Yoo Seol-ok (Choi Kang-hee) and Ha Wan-seung (Kwon Sang-woo), who are joined by familiar and new faces in solving more heinous crimes.
Spreading the Magic
A short, compact story is the best, so spreading one out across season carries risks. "Mystery Queen" had a rough few final episodes, because the decision to go for another round came along. Did writer Lee Seong-min-II have a two-season story in mind in the first place, and if not, does he truly have more to show us?
Casting sequels in an industry so new to them, and so rapidly moving is not an ease feat. Even if the creators wished for all the old characters to come back, that is nearly impossible. Are the new additions as well-conceived and cast as the creators originally intended? They certainly look a lot fun so far.
With the drama having maintained writer Lee Seong-min-II and PD Yoo Yeong-eun-I, it is in good enough hands in terms of its overall vision. There are several creative and producing factors here who have carried over, which means we're in for part 2 of a familiar, beloved and so very entertaining dream.
Having a successful first season can be a burden in terms of meeting expectations, but it also provides a good basis for the story and characters to grow. There is no need to conceive an entirely new idea, a world and characters. The creators can build on what they have, and hopefully do so well.
"Mystery Queen" is a series very close to my heart, and therefore one I am both scared and excited to face. While it is good to enjoy the anticipation, I try to keep my expectations balanced and fair, while at the same time enjoying every minute of the process. Be as good as you can be, series.
"Mystery Queen Season 2" begins its run on February 28th, and will air every Wednesday and Thursday at 22:00 KST, on KBS2 TV. It is directed by Choi Yoon-seok-II and Yoo Yeong-eun-I, written by Lee Seong-min-II and features Choi Kang-hee, Kwon Sang-woo, Park Byung-eun and Kim Hyun-sook.
