[HanCinema's Drama Review] "God's Gift - 14 Days" Episode 11

There is no doubt. "God's Gift -14 Days" has found it's stride and it's a breakneck race to the finish between Dong-chan and Soo-hyeon, and fate. Saet-byeol's murderer is a clever man, part of law enforcement, and has managed to turn people who were supposed to be Soo-hyeon's closest allies into people she cannot trust. Fate is on his side.

What makes this unknown murderer, the mysterious tattooed man, so terrifying is that he seems to have manipulated his way through everything throughout the drama. He has used other evil people directly, or hidden behind their greed to remove watchful eyes from his activities. Ji-hoon seems to be involved with him because of a past human rights case, and is being blackmailed with his family as the tattooed man's bargaining chip. Woo-jin is being blackmailed with his involvement in Yeong-gyu's shooting and his police chief father's pride.

Both men cater to the tattooed man's wishes, which puts their moral compasses in grey areas. They are committing wrongs in the name of protecting those they love, and those wrongs hurt many people. The ambiguity of Woo-jin and Ji-hoon's actions towards Soo-hyeon was a primary creator of tension this episode. Both men say they care for her and want to protect her, but their actions put her in clear danger, at least from the standpoint of the viewer who knows the truth of what she's fighting for.

Ji-hoon's character is becoming more twisted as time goes by. He has hospitalized Soo-hyeon, which is a logical step given that she is prone to hysterics and doomsday predictions. However, Ji-hoon did not even once attempt to listen to his wife and he's using the hospitalization to deal with tattooed man. If he had listened to her, she'd have another ally against fate. Instead, Ji-hoon's goal to create a world according to his vision keeps him doing shady things and prevent him from being a husband. It makes me wonder how he's been throughout their marriage and how much he actually ever listened to her.

Little Saet-byeol had a huge role this episode and her connection with Dong-chan is one of the strongest relationships on the show. He understands her better than Ji-hoon, her father, does. He actively listens to her. He actively listens to Soo-hyeon. In turn, their faith in him is changing him. He has something to live for now - they've reminded him about the things he once cared about and have spurred him into taking action.

There was a conspicuous absence of Yeong-gyu, Dong-ho, and Dong-chan's mother because the episode focused more on pushing the plot towards the next big step: the second time in Soo-hyeon's history that her daughter is kidnapped. The inertia of this episode was incredibly intense, and most of it was due to how carefully it was pieced together. Individually, the components of the episode were awkward, but together, they created a canvas of the start of a massive battle. With Soo-hyeon detained, it's up to Dong-chan to save the day. I have faith that he can do it. The question is, what will fate do to stop him?
