While the last episode was content to wallow in exceptionally paranoid fantasies about the criminal element, this time "God's Quiz Season 4" goes the exact opposite direction and gives us a surprisingly relatable story about the miserable modern life of office workers. This episode was a bit of a shock to me. I suppose mainly because I'm not totally sure how anyone even pegged this as a murder in the first place. The poisoning involved here happens mainly because people think it sounds impossible.
Never mind that, though. Solving the crime requires Jin-woo to go undercover. I really liked this subversive element, because there's this one part about Jin-woo that's only sporadically addressed- the guy's kind of short. He looks unassuming. Now, in reality, the man is pretty outspoken. Even in his undercover assignment Jin-woo stands up for himself too much. But he looks like the kind of guy who could be easily cowed down.
There's an aggressive aspect to his character, though, that's easy to discount although we really shouldn't. And for once I actually liked the interplay between the broader plotline and the mystery. Jin-woo's jealous of this guy, even though he logically knows full well that Kyeong-hee isn't going to abandon him. Not after all that drama earlier on. They're all part of the same team here. They really care about each other.
The same can't be said for the office environment, which goes a long way to increasing the intrigue of the mystery. Nobody even really seems all that bothered by the fact that one of their co-workers died. Or at least, they're not letting their concern show as long as the managers act as abrasive bullies over even the slightest infraction. There's no way their work could possibly be this important, and yet there's a harsh life-or-death atmosphere hanging over the proceedings.
Compare the cool team of medical detectives, who are doing important work, but don't exhaust themselves to death trying to do it. Sure they might give each other a hard time every now and then. That's just camaraderie though, and this is why they're always able to solve their cases. At least some of this is guesswork on my part, of course. The focus is so much on Jin-woo's agitation at pretending to be a normal office worker there's not much development of the other characters except at a piecemeal pace. What we do get, though, happens to be pretty decent.
