[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Let's Eat - Season 2" Episode 10

The humor this episode consists primarily of callbacks- namely to the entire incident with the bike. The extent to which the characters are willing to tell ridiculous lies for reasons that don't really make much sense is the larger thematic point. Sure it's fun to watch everybody squirm in the near term. But in the long term, why are they lying exactly? What exactly is the end game for a bunch of relationships that are founded upon the idea of silly deceit?

Note that Soo-ji isn't asking these questions. And why should she? Her dream has finally come true and gosh darn it, she's going to enjoy it. I also liked how Dae-yeong is conscripted into helping Soo-ji and Sang-won out because apparently this is now his permanent obligation. On one end I kind of feel sorry for the guy getting his life upended. On the other end, Dae-yeong is rather obviously doing nothing at all interesting or productive in his spare time anyway.

More mildly failing points include the way "Let's Eat - Season 2" tries to build genuine dramatic tension as to the question of whether or not something terrible has happened to Hye-rim. Of course the answer is no. Maybe it's just because I've watched the first season- but in any case the same trick's not going to slip by me twice. All the same, it's the fundamentals that make "Let's Eat - Season 2" fun to watch, and those points continue to succeed.

Let's take the food porn. One lovely bit is shunted right up to the front, and I was excited to find that the drama is dealing with a culinary question which I too have to debate sometimes- what are we supposed to do with the onions in these circumstances? The argument between Soo-ji and Dae-yeong is brief, but then, what's the point of searching out delicious food if you're going to waste the whole meal time arguing over it?

I'm still not convinced that Soo-ji and Dae-yeong are necessarily the couple we're supposed to root for here. It is, again, fun to watch them squirm as people suggest that they really seem to look good together. It's just, Dae-yeong already ruined one relationship off-screen. What's to say he won't do the same to another one? Personally, I'm fine just watching these characters scramble around trying to satisfy their appetites. Hunger- that which by design, never really goes away.
