[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Master's Sun" Episode 6

The love quadrangle is in full swing and is hilariously funny in true Hong sisters fashion. They develop their characters along with the romance and the world that Gong-shil lives in through their signature witty repartee. Along with that we get a dose of horror, a lot of cute, and some wicked chemistry. The weakness of the show is still in the horror aspect, but even then they manage to make the ghost's situation highlight the beauty of the relationship the ghost left behind. This episode's ghost is a cameo from man's best friend who stayed loyal even in death to help his distraught master.

Ghost dog and master

While the premise of the ghost-of-the-day's story seems goofy, it actually does well in showcasing the strong bond between the ghost dog and his master. The ghost dog was most definitely chosen because it is a wealth of comedy fodder. So much clever wordplay. Dog jokes galore! The back story is that the dog's master was abused in the military and miserable - then they made him put down his beloved dog who was the only thing keeping him sane. After the dog's death, the master deserts the army and hides out in Joong-won's mall.

What makes this episode especially fun is watching Gong-shil juggle the ghost dog's needs, Kang Woo's suspicions of her strange behavior and Joong-won's burgeoning jealousy. We watch her come out of her shell and encounter new difficulties because of the freedom that touching Joong-won gives her. She enjoys being able to live like everyone else and that appreciation she feels is what is melting Joong-won's icy, money-loving heart.

Kang Woo, on the other hand, has now become a bit more difficult for Gong-shil to handle because it is revealed that he hates ghosts and people who believe in them. Despite their mutual attraction, this pushes her close to Joong-won. She goes to Joong-won for love advice and in the process becomes closer to him. It also provides some great childish fits of jealousy on Joong-won's part. Surprisingly, Joong-won gives good romantic advice, which is a welcome change in the usual jealous male lead. A touch of rationality is always welcome in a show as wacky as this one.

Joong-won

The best part of the episode was watching Joong-won grow. Gong-shil has helped pull him out of the rut he was stuck in. His trauma from the past made him obsessed with money and concerned with very little else. Because of her, he is learning to care about someone besides himself and he's also starting to consider himself as more than just a victim of his accident. She genuinely appreciates him, which is something he desperately needed after the accident. Because of all of this, he fears for her safety more in this episode and actually faces danger in order to help the deserting soldier.

It's really good to see Gong-shil help Joong-won grow up while he helps Gong-shil open up. There is give and take in their relationship. It's the kind of thing I like to see in a drama.
