Never have victories felt so disappointing, as a lot of things are set right in episode fourteen of "Mother - Drama", but with "right" not being closer to the reality our heroines wanted. A lot of pain, regret and relief come to the surface, and a lot of scores are settled. Yet the reality of things remains, and that reality will not tolerate the reunion of a victim and a kidnapper. However, Hye-na and Soo-jin go through their respective, separate journeys with only each other in mind.
I had been wondering how triumphant in tone "Mother - Drama" would become upon any possible positive outcomes for Soo-jin (Lee Bo-young) and Hye-na (Heo Yool), because stories love cathartic endings. Despite this tendency, the series does not sugar-coat the fact that the resolution of our heroines' escape is not a triumph, but a relief, and a time to start healing from scars which will not go away overnight, such as poor Hye-na's trauma.
I am also glad that the story did not cower away from keeping Ja-yeong (Ko Sung-hee) a truly terrible person, while it simultaneously provides different strokes of parents through the amazing scene between her and Won-hee's mother. They both allowed a man to poison them while they were vulnerable, but one understood the situation they were in and their role in it, and ultimately cared about their child and future victims enough to work through their guilt.
While it is easy to feel as if Ja-yeong and Soo-jin's verdicts are a wonderful thing, they do not automatically fix everything that has happened, or everything that has to happen from now on. Hye-na is in a very vulnerable state right now, because Soo-jin was the one helping her hold on through her trauma. As much as I want the two to be together as soon as possible, I struggle to find a way in which any authority or government would let a kidnapper adopt a child. There is no easy reunion waiting for our women.
When a reunion does happen, however, it will be with both of them free and able to openly meet without constantly looking over their shoulder and being afraid. Soo-jin's life will be easier, but for a traumatized child like Hye-na, the adoption systems could still cause a lot of damage. The facility she is currently in looks good, but adoptees struggle through so many things, and the possibility of Hye-ma being taken to another country is very real.
My hope for the finale is that, if there are no miraculous solutions to keep Hye-na close and possibly visiting Soo-jin with supervision throughout her life as a minor, the two will at least get to meet and have a talk about life moving forward, even if apart. Depending on what Soo-jin can leave Hye-na with, Hye-na can find happiness in a good family and grow up to be a wonderful lady who can meet her mother once more.
