[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Queen of Mystery Season 2" Episode 4

Wan-seung and Seol-ok are faced with the difficult case of an underage arsonist, made worse by his selfish and negligent parents. The trauma of the little girl and her mother greatly affects Seol-ok, and memories of her own parents make her determined to get justice. Meanwhile, Wan-seung's father is released from prison, and the mysterious Mr. Kim keeps a close eye on him and his elder son. As we learn more about our new characters, a sinister possibility surfaces.

Before getting to Seol-ok (Choi Kang-hee) and her journey through being a real woman of the law, let us talk about the delightfully creepy ending to the episode, and Hee-yeon's (Lee Da-hee) true nature. Having already seen her cleared in episode three, I was quick to dismiss her complete lack of worry over the previous fire incident. While being very rich and bribing people does not automatically make her an enemy, there are several worrying hints being dropped.

Hee-yeong's true colorsJi-seung and his father

We are certainly gathering some morally ambiguous characters here, although I have to admit that the only reason I find newly introduced Ha Ji-seung (Kim Tae-woo) suspicious is because of the actor, the character description and the fact that he looks like a dorky schoolboy at his own inauguration. I am also delighted to see Jang Gwang as Ha Jae-ho, because he knows the most about Mr. Kim and Hyun-soo's (Hong Soo-hyun) story. I hope Wan-seung (Kwon Sang-woo) will have at least one normal family member left by the end of all this.

While new players come in who are clearly or possibly connected to the main story, I find the improvement of the standalone cases promising. This time around, we have more focus on the victims, and I feel that the case is handled well. Justice is important, but it is also important to handle underage culprits with care. Won-jae (Park Min-su) was clearly not aware of what he did, although I do find his parents sudden turn to decency a bit too contrived.

More importantly, little Ye-na's (Um Chae-young) plight brings much needed material to Seol-ok's journey through the police force. As an honorary officer, she will not be able to fully dive into the work and get used to all the challenges that come with it. I distinctly remember a moment in "Queen of Mystery", during the case of the elderly couple in the beginning, where Seol-ok's limitations as a civilian became apparent.

If she is to acquire the emotional, mental and strategic capabilities to match her investigative intelligence and help victims in the way she has always wanted, she needs to evolve. Wan-seung has his own shortcomings, which are obvious in the way he is constantly shunned. Since his obsession with the case of Hyun-soo is not going anywhere, he can hopefully solve it and move on. Hand in hand with Seol-ok, because they are still absolutely adorable.

"Queen of Mystery Season 2" is directed by Choi Yoon-seok-II and Yoo Yeong-eun-I, written by Lee Seong-min-II and features Choi Kang-hee, Kwon Sang-woo, Park Byung-eun and Kim Hyun-sook.
