"Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" is off to an adorable start. Chemistry between Hyung-sik as Ahn Min-hyeok and Park Bo-young as the titular Do Bong-soon is strong even if the story outline is pretty commonplace. The look of the drama is like a shoujo manga come to life complete with adorable female lead with a superpower, a smiling chaebol, and a brooding cop (In Gook-doo played by Ji Soo.)
Do Bong-soon is a woman of incredible strength. In fact, in her family that power is legendary. It comes with a price: Bong-soon cannot use her power for selfish gain or she will suffer dire consequences. Her mother suffered from abusing her power and worries her daughter might incur the same. This first episode gives us a few examples of her strength, and it's definitely superhuman. The juxtaposition between her strength and her penchant for being feminine is quite lovely. I did not appreciate that she ignored the man abusing a woman on the train and acted when her phone was busted instead. She is also quite condescending towards men, especially when they posture. It gives her a huge flaw to work on, which I am in favor of.
Ahn Min-hyeok is a chaebol, but he seems to be street savvy and very open to an exceptionally strong woman. Personally, I am biased towards Park Hyung-sik as an actor and I'm very much looking forward to him as a leading man. A fantastic twist on his chaebol richness was that he rides a self-balancing scooter around. Min-hyeok witnesses Bong-soon's strength and hires her to protect him against the threats against him. The sexism that allows the men in society to be blind to the possibility that Bong-soon could've taken on a horde of men seems to be absent in Min-hyeok. At least for now. I hope it continues that way.
The second lead, Gook-doo is quite uptight, rigidly upholding the law to the chagrin of his superiors. As of now, he is quite a one-dimensional character with very little to him as of the moment. Hopefully he will open up and make use of Ji Soo's talents. For now he is a very handsome childhood love interest for Bong-soon. She is absolutely adorable when she moons over him.
This drama is off to a breezy start. I'm going to expect it to be a bit surreal and not to heavy despite the darker moments promised by the promotional materials. Off to episode two!
