[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" Episode 13

The events of this episode of "Strong Woman Do Bong-soon" aren't surprising, but are surprisingly well-played. Determination born from despair drives Bong-soon to save her kidnapped friend, a situation common to heroes. Along the way she makes some difficult decisions, faces off with her nemesis, and struggles to reconcile all the disparate parts of her very complicated life.

Throughout the drama Bong-soon has merely lived with her powers, using them occasionally for good, but not actively pursuing justice for the wronged. It is only now with the kidnapping of her friend that her outlook truly changes. While this has been coming for quite some time, she never really committed to using her strength to help. It was more of a unkept promise. With the rescue of the kidnapped girls and her dogged pursuit of Jang-hyeon and her friend Kyeong-shim, we finally see Bong-soon actualize her potential. She will most likely take control of her destiny and go after Jang-hyeon with the help of the men in her life. I do appreciate that she, Min-hyeok, and Gook-doo are slowly becoming a team. Although I do wish that this change in Bong-soon had arrived earlier, I can't complain with how she's transforming. She's learning to open up to people, to reach out and do things about the wrongs she sees happening - it's all good.

Min-hyeok has trouble with the changes in her, mostly because he fears for her safety and feels helpless protecting a headstrong and self-sufficient woman. It's a good problem for him to have. Their breakup was foreshadowed by her insecurities regarding her Herculean abilities, but I think a fuss over it was a necessary step. It's an unusual element to be thrown into an otherwise normal relationship. Her parents on the other hand are in a poisonous relationship and I really do think her father is going to have to do something about her mother's verbal and physical abuse. It's not okay.

In the end of the episode, she loses her powers. I doubt this is a permanent effect because she needs to safe the day, but I do think the lack of power will make her appreciate them and what she can do for society much more. Let's see if it happens.
