[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Woman with a Suitcase" Episode 3

There is something that is so wonderfully introspective and real about "Woman with a Suitcase". It is rooted in the fact that Geum-joo is a delightful human being, a powerhouse paralegal, and confident, but also a little closed off to the opinions of others because she's lost sight of her sense of justice. It is Seok-woo who reminds her of the humanity inherent in the law and Bok-geo who gives her the means with which to practice it. These elements come together to form a great drama.

In this episode, Geum-joo is in fine form. She teaches Seok-woo a lot about cases he doesn't know based upon sheer experience, but what she doesn't know is that he has a keen intuition of his own that can't be bought with money, studied in school, or gained through experience. The two have an easy rapport facilitated by the fine acting of Choi Ji-woo and Lee Joon. Character development is stellar as well. Seok-woo is quiet in demeanor, but not easily bowled over. He knows when to learn from Ji-woo and when to stand his own ground. When he does, the results are spectacular.

As Seok-woo begins his slow climb to success, Ji-woo still struggles to escape from rock bottom. Her sullied reputation scares potential partners and clients away and she has to swallow her pride and turn to less respectable work, which causes gossip to flutter about. Her sister Hye-joo, while initially sweet, has a venomous streak and is one of those who listens to gossip and avoids her sister. Her ambitions lead her to some quick ladder climbing and little compunction when it comes to wooing men or clients. The two sisters will most definitely be pitted against one another in the future, one slick talking and devious, and one hard-hitting and brilliant. I look forward to it.

One important development in this episode is that Ji-woo's desperation has her accept Bok-geo's offer and because of it she gathers a band of misfits, including her former enemy Attorney Goo Ji-hyeon, to be a part of her firm. She, of course, signs a contract, but unlike other dramas, this is a veritable legal contract written in legalese, which makes it quite funny.

Another development is that we learn with certainty that Bok-geo was in the legal profession and was chased out by the same people who landed Geum-joo in jail. They are most definitely dangerous people, but much of what these two people do herd them into close quarters with the crazies. Just take a look at the end of this episode. With that said, onto episode 4!
