HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.10.07 ~ 2011.10.09)

Hwang Dong-hyuk's controversial new film "Silenced" continues to cause a stir at the top of the chart. 447,049 admissions was enough to see it cling to the top prize as the Korean public continues to press for answers on the true life case that inspired its making.

In second is Sohn Young-sung's "The Client", earning 395,973 admissions and holding onto its good run of success. The court house thriller is acting as the counter balance to "The Client" as lawyers battle it out both in and out the court room to uncover the truth behind a defence lawyer's OCD client and his inability to express himself in the murder case against him. A new Korean entry is in top ten now in the form of Kim Sang-jin's "Fighting Spirit". Kim Joo-hyuk plays the pitcher Do-hun whose stardom gets to his head. The drama had some 90,941 admissions this past weekend, securing its position at three. "Red Steel" with Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, and Dakota Goyo is the first foreign film entry at four. This sci-fi action film explores a world were robotic boxing is a competitive sport.

"Countdown" has slipped from last week's number three to five, adding just 61,010 to its total of 403,805. At number six is Korea's biggest film of the year. "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" has now surpassed "Sunny" and stands on a total of 7,378,874 admissions, Just over-taking the 7,369,202 "Sunny" had amassed. "The Three Musketeers" follows the Korean giant at seven with 41,083, adding some more glitz and cinematic pop to the classic tale of brotherhood and honour.

John Madden's espionage thriller "The Debt" has come to Korea screens now and has been slotted into the number eight position followed by the Japanese animation film "From Up on Poppy Hill". And with 16,337, Jim Carrey's "Mr. Popper's Penguins" is at the bottom of the stack.
