HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.12.30 ~ 2012.01.01)

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" is enjoying its third week at the top, and has added 1,013,668 to its total of 5,386,797 admissions. Tom Cruise's latest has silenced any doubts about the series becoming stale as his efforts here have been well received and continue to captivate audiences. The film is looking to pass "Kung Fu Panda 2" and even "Punch" in the top grossing films released in 2011.

The second modern Sherlock Holmes film has jumped passed the big Korean war epic "My Way" with 448,287, but was unable to threaten Mr Bird's smash hit. "My Way" has not been as big a success as one would have thought as many have been underwhelmed by director Kang Je-gyu's big budget flick. It is down one place from second with 416,646 as it approaches the 2 million admissions mark. But "Perfect Game" is a quiet favourite at the moment, steadily holding down forth in its third week out on the silver screen.

The Japanese animation "Friends: Naki on Monster Island" has entered the charts at five with 166,347. Takashi Yamazaki directs the film and the Japanese R&B singer MISIA does the theme song for it. "Spellbound", by director Hwang In-ho, is the last Korean film in the top ten this week and its fifth week has allowed it to amass a total of 2,819,392 admissions. Disney's classic tale of the "Lion King" has been given a techno makeover; the added dimension and novelty placed it at seven with 139,178 admissions.

The bottom of the chart is comprised of three animations. Two of which are the new Pokémon films "Pokémon the Movie: White - Victini and Zekrom" and "Pokémon the Movie: Black - Victini and Reshiram" occupying eight and ten respectfully. "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked" is down three places from sixth with 61,468 admissions.
