Director Lee Han and principle actors Jung Woo-sung and Kim Hyang-gi released a celebratory picture. "Innocent Witness" passed the million viewer milestone today, so they have reason to be happy. The film achieved this in eight days after a slow start largely on the strength of word-of-mouth.
"Innocent Witness" is a legal drama about the relationship between a defense attorney and an autistic high school student who is the only witness to a death that could either be a murder or a suicide. The film has been praised largely for its emotional realism. It's a stoic low-key look both at the criminal justice system and what life is like for a teenage girl with autism.
"Innocent Witness" has hit this milestone faster than "Punch", director Lee Han's previous popular word-of-mouth film about the lives of South Korean teenagers. "Punch" required nine days to get a million viewers, and eventually left cinemas having achieved an impressive total of 5,311,533 admissions.
"Punch" was also Yoo Ah-in's breakout film role that established him as a major star. It remains to be seen whether "Innocent Witness" can match this success, as it faces competition from "Svaha: The Sixth Finger" this weekend.
