[HanCinema's News] "Jirisan" to Be Simulcast Worldwide

The global streaming platform iQIYI recently announced that they had acquired the broadcasting rights to the upcoming drama "Jirisan" worldwide. The drama, which stars Jun Ji-hyun, Ju Ji-hoon, Sung Dong-il, and Oh Jung-se among others started filming last month. "Jirisan" is expected to premiere in 2021, but has already attracted strong interest due to being the comeback project for Jun Ji-hyun, who is particularly popular in China.

"Jirisan" also features Kim Eun-hee-I as the scriptwriter, coming off her international success with "Kingdom". Lee Eung-bok of the similarly popular "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" and "Mr. Sunshine" is directing. "Jirisan" will be offered in eight languages worldwide when it premieres, and it will also be possible to watch the drama at the same time new episodes are airing in South Korea.

The sale of "Jirisan" rights is only the latest example of drama production companies attempting to budget dramas by negotiating international streaming well in advance. The last major deal closed by iQIYI was "Dinner Mate" from earlier this year. "Jirisan" is likely to be a much bigger hit, finally giving Netflix some serious competition when it comes to purveying South Korean dramas worldwide.
