While many factors can be used to explain the success of "Doctor Prisoner", few are eclectic as Namgoong Min's hair. Searches for Namgoong Min's hairstyle and suit have been trending. Like everything else regarding the drama, this image has been specially crafted around the design of his character, prison doctor Yi-je.
In short Namgoong Min's hair makes him look smart and in control. Note the length. While Namgoong Min's hair is a bit longer than the average length for South Korean men, it has been moved up a little and carefully set in place. This not only makes him look taller, but also more in control.
Yet the natural curls also give Yi-je a sense of warmth and authority. It doesn't look like he puts that much effort into them. This hints at a malleable personality- although Yi-je himself is the one intent on doing the melding, and expresses suitable hostility to anyone who gets in the way. Thematically the hair is a good metaphor for his deliberate turn to the dark side.
"Doctor Prisoner" appears on KBS2 at 10:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday. It has been enjoying excellent ratings, with the most recent episode hitting 14.5%.
