While new releases have returned to the South Korean box office admissions numbers are low going into the weekend and are likely to remain as such going into the weekend as the big marketing push to reopen the market following COVID-19 has ended. Following weaker than hoped for numbers for "#ALIVE" last weekend the quiet will likely remain until the release of "Peninsula" on July 15th.
"#ALIVE" opened strong last week with two hundred thousand admissions on its opening day but the zombie thriller lost momentum due to poor word of mouth. Though it still leads the box office "#ALIVE" only added about fifty thousand admissions per day on the weekdays. Still, the movie is currently projected to break two million viewers over the weekend from its current record of around 1.35 million admissions.
"Innocence" has shown decent resilience at the box office. The legal thriller opened all the way back on June 10th but still maintains second place at the box office thanks to weak competition. While the movie stands at only seventy seven thousand admissions going into the weekend it may yet break a million viewers.
"The Singer", the main new South Korean movie of note, has only broken thirty thousand admissions going into the weekend. The pansori themed traditional musical has been a hard sell to both distributors as well as audiences due to its eclectic subject matter, though the movie has earned much praise online. The movie will likely have better luck in secondary distribution markets where it can be more deliberately targeted.
