[HanCinema's News] "Parasite" Expected to Clean up at Blue Dragon Film Awards

2019/11/14 | Permalink

The fortieth annual Blue Dragon Film Awards will be taking place on November 21st. Since the nominees were announced, "Parasite" has emerged as the obvious favorite, though other strong films released this year have outside chances in some of the award's fifteen categories.

"Parasite" is the easy frontrunner for best film. However, "Extreme Job" and "House of Hummingbird" have a distant chance at an upset. The chances of Bong Joon-ho winning best director are even more overwhelming, with director Lee Byeong-heon-I of "Extreme Job" rating a very distant second place.

The competition for best lead actor is a more evenly matched one that could go to either Song Kang-ho for "Parasite" or Ryu Seung-ryong of "Extreme Job". Though both actors are listed as the leads for their films, both are ensemble pieces. The main consideration will likely be whether voters would prefer to give Song Kang-ho his record fourth win or give Ryu Seung-ryong his first one after two previous failed nominations for "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" and "Everything about my Wife".

Park Myung-hoon of "Parasite" and Jin Seon-kyu of "Extreme Job" face a similar dynamic in the supporting actor race as ensemble members. However, in this case Jin Seon-kyu is the previously honored winner, while Park Myung-hoon has not yet won anything. Lee Jung-eun of "Parasite" is the obvious favorite in the women's category, though Lee Honey of "Extreme Job" and Kim Sae-byuk of "House of Hummingbird" are also contenders.

Best actress is the most competitive field, with Kim Hye-soo of "Default" going up against Jeon Do-yeon of "Birthday" and Jo Yeo-jung of "Parasite". Jo Yeo-jung has the most acclaimed role, but like Song Kang-ho, she is just a part of an ensemble. Kim Hye-soo and Jeon Do-yeon have more decisive leading roles but in movies that were not as popular.
