[HanCinema's News] "Reborn Rich" Becomes Unrivaled Success for JTBC
By William Schwartz | Published on
Recently, JTBC has been outshined both by other South Korean television channels as well as online-only streaming platforms. But the cable network is ending the year on a powerful note with "Reborn Rich" and its exceptional ratings. The eighth episode of the corporate power struggle had 19.4% ratings this past Sunday. With 9.3% ratings among the coveted 20-49 demographic, "Reborn Rich" is a major success even among younger viewers alone.
This all springs from a comparably modest start of 6.1% ratings in the drama's first episode, suggesting genuine viral popularity for the show. With three weeks and eight episodes to go, "Reborn Rich" breaking 20% ratings is practically guaranteed. "Reborn Rich" has also already outperformed the previous three best-performing dramas of the year. These are "Extraordinary Attorney Woo" with 17.5%, "Under the Queen's Umbrella" with 16.9%, and "One Dollar Lawyer" with 15.2%.
What's more, the 14.8% ratings earned by "Reborn Rich" in its sixth episode at the end of its second week also outperformed nearly every other popular drama this year. These include "Our Blues" with 14.6%, "Big Mouth" with 13.7%, "Again My Life" with 12%, "Business Proposal" with 11.6%, and "Twenty Five Twenty One" with 11.5%. Notably, none of these other top dramas came from JTBC.
However, "Reborn Rich" is only third place on the all-time list for JTBC. It passed "Itaewon Class" with 16.5% ratings, and now looks to exceed "SKY Castle" with 23.8% ratings and "The World of the Married" with 28.4% ratings. The relative age of these extremely popular dramas points to JTBC's weakened position over this year and last year. "The World of the Married" aired back in 2020.
The popularity of "Reborn Rich" is unlikely to abate. According to the Good Data Corporation, 43.1% of all social media references about television dramas reference "Reborn Rich" and Song Joong-ki has been the most popular actor in the country for the last three weeks. Lee Sung-min, Park Ji-hyun, Kim Nam-hee-I, and Kim Shin-rok have also enjoyed big boosts to their profiles. Even the World Cup has shown no signs of slowing "Reborn Rich" down.
