"Extraordinary You" has been a big step up for the career of Rowoon, who had dabbled for years in minor roles before landing a leading role in the high school fantasy romance. The parallel to the story arc of his character is also appropriate, as he evolves from being a non-factor to someone increasingly intertwined in the convoluted destiny shaping world of the proper lead who is played by Kim Hye-yoon.
Because Rowoon's character starts out as irrelevant, and for quite some time doesn't even have a name, Rowoon was very careful to focus on the non verbal aspects of his performance. He has discussed how being able to communicate via eye contact alone has been a critical part of his performance.
Other important aspects of the character include his purity and bravery. Rowoon considers the main important element of his character's growth to be his desire to protect the female lead, which is also the main logical reading of the webtoon on which "Extraordinary You" is based.
This studious thought process behind Rowoon's performance also extends to the drama's beginning to encapsulate historical drama elements in addition to the present day. Rowoon said he utilized his non-verbal performance aspects from earlier in the drama to communicate a similar feeling the less outspoken past day portion, allowing him to maintain the same basic character.
