[HanCinema's News] South Korean Box Office in February Up 50% Compared to Last Year

2019/03/18 | 262 views | Permalink

On March 18th the Korean Film Council released its data for the South Korea's February box office. According to their figures, attendance rates increased by 43% and overall revenues increased by 50%, boosted in large part by "Extreme Job".

The news was to be expected. February is not generally a high performance period for movies, which was one of the reasons why the success of "Extreme Job" was so surprising.

"Extreme Job" alone counted for approximately 10,890,000 of the admissions in February. This is compared to approximately 17,230,000 overall admissions for the month. The latter figure is now the all-time record for the South Korean box office in February.

The Korean Film Council also noted how "Extreme Job" success was surprising coming off of the high profile winter failures of "Drug King", "Take Point", and "Swing Kids", all of which had production budgets over fifteen million dollars. Even "Hit-and-Run Squad", with its thirteen million dollar budget underwhelmed compared to "Extreme Job" and its comparatively modest ten million dollar budget.

"Extreme Job"'s success boosted the market share of domestic South Korean films to 77% for the the month of February. However, such numbers are unlikely to be repeated for March with the release of Captain Marvel.
