Over the course of June the South Korean box office had over 3.86 million admissions. Though weaker than previous years, this figure is over double the equivalent for May, with only 1.52 million admissions, itself an improvement over April, with only 970,000 admissions. So it is that movie distributors are getting bolder, with a stronger slate set for July.
The follow-up to the hit 2016 zombie movie "Train to Busan", "Peninsula" will hit theaters first on July 15th from the same director, Yeon Sang-ho. The timing is somewhat odd, coming only a few weeks after the unrelated zombie movie "#ALIVE" which is still topping the domestic box office, albeit not very strongly. "Peninsula" has much higher expectations, in spite of COVID-19 fears, and may well outdo the entirity of June's box office.
"Steel Rain 2: The Summit" comes next on July 29th. Another sequel, this time to the 2017 political thriller "Steel Rain", it also comes from the same director, Yang Woo-seok in this case. In spite of having more theoretically peaceful overtones, given how the movie is centered around a peace summit, more military brinksmanship is expected from this flick making it another candidate for a strong box office performance.
Lastly, "Deliver Us From Evil" recently had its release date confirmed for August 5th. At only a week after "Steel Rain 2: The Summit", the contract killer flick is not making much effort to socially distance itself from the previous blockbuster, which is surprising as "Deliver Us From Evil" had at one point been expected to screen in early July. This suggests genuine belief among the studios that the COVID-19 slowdown can be beaten- though they may yet be easily proven wrong on that score.
