[HanCinema's News] The Slick Chaos That Was "Kill It"

On April 28th "Kill It" closed out its twelve episode run on OCN with a 2.546% rating. The technically well-made highly visual cable drama was in many ways to be a proving ground for Nana's attempt to move from being a singer to being an actress. This was successful, to the extent Nana was able to land a leading role in the upcoming broadcast drama "Justice".

"Kill It" sold itself principally on concept. Jang Ki-yong was the veterinarian killer with a lot of flair for action. Nana was the cold cool detective. In practice, though, it was difficult to translate these elements into an effective story. "Kill It" became a drama that could stoke some interest, but not consistently.

Consider the ratings. The first episode of "Kill It" had 1.114%- respectable enough for a drama in its early days. But the main factor affecting the ratings for "Kill It" throughout its run was whether the episode aired on Saturday or Sunday. Saturday episodes ranged from .926% (episode 7) to 1.359% (episode 11), while Sunday episodes went from 1.772% (episode 8) to 2.757% (episode 4).

"Trap - Drama", which preceded "Kill It" had similar deficiencies between Saturday and Sunday, but not as extreme. It also helped that "Trap - Drama" had a higher ratings overall, topping out at 3.992% for the final episode with the drama having started out at 2.36% and moved fairly consistently from there.

And of course, there's no accounting for subjective taste. Whatever critical or professional goals "Kill It" may have had, OCN is moving into more assured territory with "Voice 3", the third installment of the popular crime drama centered around the core concept of emergency phone calls.
