Heartthrob Hyun Bin Volunteers for Marines

Heartthrob Hyun Bin, currently appearing in the hit drama "Secret Garden", has volunteered to join the Marines. His management agency AM Entertainment on Wednesday said Hyeon was interviewed in December and if he passes the test, he will join the Marines in March. The 29-year old will be notified by the Military Manpower Administration around Jan. 20.

Hyeon's move at a time when tensions between North and South Korea are high could encourage others to follow suit, and web forums are already filled with thousands of comments praising him.

The actor shot to stardom in 2005 when he appeared in the hit drama "My Name is Kim Sam-soon". And with the success of "Secret Garden", Hyeon won the top acting award at SBS last year. He also took part in the theme music for the show, which is sweeping the Korean music charts. After the drama's last episode airs on Sunday, Hyeon will briefly promote his upcoming movie "Late Autumn - 2010" before joining the military.
