Heat Wave Kills 5 People, Hundreds of Thousands of Livestock

An intense heat wave that has gripped the country this summer is taking the lives of people and livestock.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday that five people died and over 1,000 people suffered from heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses during the period between late May and early August.

The unrelenting heat has also caused over 630,000 deaths of farm animals, including 588,000 chickens, 18,000 ducks and 13,000 pigs as of Friday, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
