Smog blankets Seoul on Nov. 18. /Yonhap
Vehicles emitting excessive pollutants will be barred from entering downtown Seoul in a bid to reduce fine dust pollution in the winter season.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on Monday that vehicles that emit a high level of pollutants, mostly smoke-belching trucks and old diesel vehicles, will be banned from the city's main thoroughfares from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for four months from December to March next year as air pollution usually worsens in the winter.
Violators will be fined W250,000 (US$1=W1,178). Emergency vehicles and vehicles for handicapped people will be exempt from the restrictions.
The city government expects the latest measure will reduce emissions of dust particles by 15.6 percent.
