A Hollywood movie depicting the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir during the Korean War will begin shooting in Korea late this year.

Titled "17 Days of Winter", the 3D film with a budget of over US$100 million will be directed by Eric Brevig, who also helmed "Journey to the Center of the Earth".

The film will portray the brutal two-week battle in November 1950, in which the U.S. 1st Marine Division, encircled by 120,000 Chinese soldiers near the Chosin Reservoir in freezing winter weather, fought back from the brink of annihilation to break out of the encirclement and safely evacuate refugees.

In an email interview with the Chosun Ilbo, Brevig said the film will be the first to vividly portray the gravity of the Korean War in 3D. It is expected to be released in the spring of 2013.

The script was recently completed by screenwriter Frank Pierson, who won an Oscar award for his screenplay for "Dog Day Afternoon (1975)".

A production office will be opened in Seoul next month to handle set design and art direction. Brevig aims to cast the major roles in July and start shooting in the winter.
