Illegal copies of DVDs and CDs are sold more in cities

Illegal copies of DVDs and CDs are mainly sold in cities, a report said.

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Minister: Kim, Jong-Min) joined hands with the Seoul City Office to conduct a crackdown on illegal DVDs and CDs sold around subway stations and other busy areas in 16 districts in Seoul and announced the result on Oct. 26.

A special raiding team composed of 20 officials from the Copyright Protection Center, Seoul City Office, and District Offices raided a total of 54 spots for 10 days and nights from Oct. 8 to 19 and confiscated 11,417 illegal copies of DVDs and CDs.

By district, Jung-gu turned out the largest number of illegal copies (1,743 illegal copies) confiscated, followed by Jongro-gu (1,577), and Gangnam-gu (1,387). The ratio of these three districts exceeded 40% of the total number of confiscation.

"Illegal online copies make it easy to produce illegal DVDs and CDs offline", said the Minister of Culture and Tourism. "With the online copyright protection policy made much more stringent than ever, we will also conduct full-scale crackdowns on offline illegal copies to abolish both online and offline piracy".
