"In the era of fusion between broadcasting and communication, cultural content is still king"

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism (Minister: Kim. Myeong-Gon) held a forum on Nov. 29 on the government's policy to support the cultural content and media industries at the Broadcasting Center in Mok-dong to explore ways to proactively cope with the changes in the paradigm involving Korean cultural industries, including the fusion of broadcasting and communication.

With the purpose of examining and discussing various issues regarding the previous government policy to support the country's cultural industry, as well as the policy's problems, strategies and directions in the future, the forum was co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Suh, Byung-Moon), the Korea Culture and Tourism Policy Institute (KCTPI), the Korean Broadcasting Institute, and the Korea Press Foundation.

"To meet the increasing demand for content in this era of the fusion of broadcasting and communication, a great number of good-quality content should be produced based on cultural originality and imagination", said Kim, Myeong-Gon, Minister of Culture and Tourism. "And despite the drastic paradigm changes, content is still king in the cultural content and media industry".

"As content is the core element of the promotion and development of the industry, it is best for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which is in charge of the original means of content production, such as fundamental arts, copyrights and the Korean syndrome, to embark on an integrated establishment of promotional policy for the industry", added the Minister. "For this reason, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism is exploring for a new change from commissioning a full-scale strategic report to the reorganization of the ministry and nurturing talented personnel".

"Although the basic ground for the Propulsion Committee for the Fusion of Broadcasting and Communication has been set, the National Assembly is still considering which department should take charge of the content for the good of the country", said Lee, Eun-Yeong (UP), a member of the National Assembly. "I hope that this forum, which brought to the fore various academic parties and related government officials and specialists, will shed light on original and imaginative content that can be fused with new technologies and that can contribute to the country's economy".

"The cultural industry, along with the innovative development of information technology, will play a leading role in the future growth of Korea's economy", said Jeong, Hong-Ik, professor at the Graduate School of Administration, Seoul National University, who presented a keynote for the forum. "As Korea has been equipped with advanced information technology infrastructure, it has a huge potential to grow to become a leading nation in the world's cultural industry".

"Considering the changes in the industrial paradigm, thanks to the fusion of broadcasting and communication, we need to prepare for a second leap toward a new level in cultural content and media by promoting and activating discussions on policy and industrial strategies", added Jeong.

"Further from the current policy in cultural content, we must seek to create a link?or harmony?between the existing policy and fine arts, traditional culture and amateur cultural activities. This is an urgent issue that we should deal with so that we can make another leap toward a new era".
