Incentives Fail to Motivate Couples to Have Kids

A nugatory 2.6 percent of the population are minded to have more children despite government spending of over W2 trillion a year to raise Korea's dwindling birthrate, a poll suggests (US$1=W1,177).

The Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs recently released a poll of 1,139 households who were paid childcare allowances last December.

Only 2.6 percent of the respondents said they want to have more children, although 38.1 percent said they are now able to save up money to have kids and 28.9 percent said they are able to send their children to more tutorial classes. Some 23.9 percent said they noticed no change.

The government has been paying W100,000 a month in childcare allowances since September last year to low-income households with children under seven.
