‘The Host’ to Be Released in 250 Theaters in Japan

Director Bong Joon-ho's latest work The Host will be released in 250 Japanese theaters on Sept. 2, the Internet edition of Nikkan Sports said Wednesday. It is the first time Japanese newspapers have reported details about the release of the upcoming Korean movie.

The Japanese sports newspaper said that The Host directed by Bong--called the "Akira Kurosawa of Korea"--had been highly praised as the best movie of the year when it was premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival. It will be released in 10 other nations across the world, it added.

The movie was sold to Japan for US$4.7 million after showing only the script and drawings of characters at the Hong Kong film market in March, without previewing any footage that had actually been shot. Japan reportedly suggested dividing box office profits according to the movie's success after the release.

It remains to be seen how much the movie, featuring a monster created with special effects, will appeal to Japanese people who are already used to the country's advanced special effects technology.

The movie will be released on July 27 in Korea.
