Jang Keun-suk to Start Substitute Military Service Due to Mental Health Issues

Actor Jang Keun-suk will begin his mandatory military service on July 16, but he will perform a substitute service at a public agency due to health issues.

His agency said Saturday that Jang was deemed ineligible for active duty due to bipolar disorder, which he has been suffering since 2011.

"This is a very private matter, and we are mindful of the need for confidentiality", the agency said. "However, we are well aware that Jang has grown as an actor thanks to the support and love of his fans, and he is very grateful for that. We feel a responsibility to let the fans know what he is dealing with".

He will undergo basic training at boot camp before being assigned to an agency to complete his service.
