Jang Nara Selected as Candidate for "Hot Issue of May" by Chinese Media

The influential Chinese current affairs magazine "People of Our Era" and the largest Chinese portal website Sina.com have selected singer Jang Nara as a candidate to appear in the "Hot Issue of May", according to Jang's official website.

The two Chinese media organs regularly choose "people of the month" from various sectors including politics, economy, culture and sports.

Other candidates for the "Hot Issue of May" include Taiwanese People's Party official Lien Chan, who contributed to promoting reconciliation between China and Taiwan; former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, who has drawn significant public attention for recently disclosed photographs showing him in prison; and film director George Lucas, who produced the movie "Star Wars: Episode III".

The "people of the month" are selected from well-known public figures who have made headlines during the month or produced a significant social impact from China's perspective. The list of candidates, the majority of whom are Chinese, is posted on Sina.com for online voting.

Jang was chosen as a candidate when she became the first foreign artist to sell over one million copies of her album "Il-jang" in China and for capturing the Chinese media's spotlight throughout May by participating in various large-scale events in China. She released her fourth album in China on May 1, which topped record sales charts.

Jang also drew more than 200 reporters to a press conference for her new movie "Tricky Rough Princess" on May 7, and was named Korea's goodwill ambassador to the city of Shenyang on May 18 and the city of Sichuan on May 27.

The Korean artist also became the first non-Chinese-speaking celebrity to be nicknamed "chun-hoo" by the Chinese media (a title that is only given to famous female entertainers in the Chinese-speaking region). This title is usually given to entertainers who are highly recognized for both their superb acting and singing skills. The only two other stars who have earned the title are Hong Kong stars Kelly Chen and Karen Mok.
