KBS imposes ban on convicted entertainers

The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) Monday banned Kim Yong-jun, a member of boy band S.G. Wannabe, from appearing in its programs, for having recently been convicted of a hit-and-run.
Kim is one in a group of convicted singers, entertainers and TV personnel who have been newly black-listed by the nation's largest broadcaster.
"We have a rule of banning those in the entertainment business who cause trouble, which means they cannot appear in TV shows", an official from KBS said. "We think their appearance on TV could damage our reputation, too".
Kim has been sentenced to eight months in jail suspended for two years for a hit-and-run last January.
Along with Kim, three more people have been included in the prohibition list — fashion model Yeo Wook-hwan, singer Lee Sung-jin and comedian Jeon Chang-gul.
Yeo has been convicted for a hit-and-run, Lee for gambling and Jeon for drug abuse.
The addition has increased the total number of entertainers on the "black list" to 26.
The list is regularly updated with those who are sentenced to jail terms on such charges as gambling, use of illegal drugs and drunk driving, the official said
"As the list is based on the outcome of their first trial, some of the names can be removed once they appeal and receive not-guilty verdicts", he said.
The penalties for those on the list include prohibition from appearing in TV shows and a ban of their music on TV and radio programs. Even footage of them appearing in TV shows in the past cannot be reused.

KBS는 27일 "도박, 뺑소니, 마약 등으로 사회적 물의를 빚은 김용준, 이성진, 전창걸, 여욱환 등 연예인 4명에 출연금지 조치를 내렸다"며 "사회적 물의를 빚어 프로그램 신뢰도, 나아가 공사 신뢰도를 훼손할 우려가 있다고 판단했다"고 밝혔다.
출연 규제자 명단에 오르면 프로그램에 출연하지 못하고, 얼굴이나 목소리 등 과거 자료화면 사용도 제한된다.
김용준과 여욱환은 뺑소니, 전창걸은 대마초 상습흡연, 이성진은 사기와 도박 혐의로 각각 실형을 선고받은 바 있다. 현재 이성진은 항소한 상태다.
KBS 측은 "법원 1심에서 실형을 선고받은 것을 기준으로 한다"면서 "만약 2심이나 3심에서 무죄 판결을 받으면 출연금지 조치는 풀린다"고 설명했다.
한편, KBS는 도박, 금지약물 복용, 추문 등으로 사회적 논란을 일으킨 신정환, 김성민, MC몽, 곽한구, 강병규, 서세원, 주지훈, 이경영 등 총 26명에 대해 출연을 금지하고 있다.
