KBS to be Flexible on Contract Worker Issue

Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) will flexibly deal with the issue of its contract workers based on how the National Assembly rewrites a bill protecting nonregular workers.

If approved, the bill is scheduled to go into effect next month.

KBS says it will be flexible in dealing with the contract worker issue at the recommendation of its board. The public broadcaster will not renew contracts with 18 nonregular workers whose employment periods expire this month.

But it will take appropriate action with regard to the contract employees if the bill is rewritten by the National Assembly.

KBS will delay decisions regarding 402 other contract workers until the National Assembly revises and approves the bill.

Nonregular workers are up in arms over the bill, which requires employers to change the labor status of temporary workers to regular if they have worked with the company for two years or more. Currently, many companies do not extend contracts with nonregular workers to avoid the change of status.
