KBS to Reduce Ads After License Fee Hike

2009/09/08 | 92 views | Permalink | Source

The nation's flagship public broadcaster, KBS, has announced it will reduce or abolish advertisements if licence fee is increased.

A senior KBS official announced the plan at a public hearing on Wednesday.

The broadcaster said it will reduce advertisements for one of its television channels, KBS 2TV, and make its terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and radio channels commercial free, if the license fee is increased from the current 25-hundred won. The fee has been frozen at 25-hundred won for the past 28 years.

The official also said KBS will open a free public service channel on the multi mode service (MMS) for digital television. It will also expand the fee exemption program and reduce the size of its staff by 15 percent.

In 1981, the television license fee was set at the level of monthly newspaper subscription. The fee has remained the same over the past 28 years while the nation's gross national income increased tenfold.

In comparison, Britain's license fee is ten times higher than South Korea's. Germany's is 12 times and Japan's is over seven times higher.
