KCC Chief Stresses Need for KBS License Fee Hike

The head of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) says that raising the TV license fee for KBS is an issue above political interests.

During a parliamentary audit on Monday, KCC chief Cho Si-jung said that he feels frustrated when political parties change their positions on the matter with the change in administrations.

Choi said that the KCC will present a report to the National Assembly if KBS submits a related proposal on a hike of the license fee. The KCC chief stressed the need for a hike, noting that the current fee for KBS is unrealistically low compared to those in Britain and Japan.

Choi also said that no sensible firm will apply for comprehensive broadcasting channels and news-only broadcasters at the same time, vowing to take proper action in the screening process if any company actually does.
