2004/09/12 | 153 views | Permalink | Source

Director of "3-Iron", Kim Ki-duk was awarded the Silver Lion as Best Director at the competition sector of the 61st Venice International Film Festival, "Venecia 61". The festival concluded Saturday (local time) in Venice, Italy.
Kim had already won the same award at the 54th Berlin International Film Festival for "Samaria" last February. Therefore, the director has scored a brilliant achievement this year, grabbing the best director awards at two of the three major international film festivals in the same year.

The Silver Lion for Best Director is the third place prize following the most honorable award, the Golden Lion for Best Film, and Jury Grand Prix.

Director Lee Chang-dong received the Silver Lion in Venice in 2002 for his film, "Oasis".
Until now, four Korean movies have been awarded the best director prize in the three most famous international film festivals. Director Im Kwon-taek also won the best director award at the Cannes International Film Festival for "Chihwaseon" in 2002.

The British director Mike Leigh's "Vera Drake" won the Golden Lion for best film in Venice. In a notable double for Leigh's film, Imelda Staunton won the festival's "Coppa Volpi" award for best actress.

The best actor award went to Spain's Javier Bardem who performed in Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar's "Out of Sea (Mar Adentro)".

"Low Life" by Im Kwon-taek was invited in the competition section together with "3-Iron", but failed to receive an award.
