Kim Ki-duk wins directing award at Venice

2004/09/13 | 74 views | Permalink | Source

South Korean Director Kim Ki-duk won the coveted award for best director at the Venice Film Festival this past weekend for his movie titled "Empty House".

The Venice Film Festival is one of the three largest film festivals, along with Berlin, and the Cannes Film Festival, with the Silver Lion one of the most prestigious awards.

Kim has also won other awards as well, including his award for "Samaria" at the Berlin Film Festival earlier in February of this year. It is rare to find a director who has won the best director award for two of the major festivals within the span of just one year.

Kim, who was quoted as being very satisfied with the award, continues to strive to produce good films. He also said that the continued presence of Korean films in international film festivals, and aggressive overseas marketing have all attributed to the growth and popularity of Korean cinema on the world stage.

The film "Empty House" has also won two unofficial awards from FIPRESI, a group of international critics and the World Catholic Association for Communication.

Along with his popularity back at home in Korea, Kim Ki-duk's other films, including his most recent, "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring", have been received well by audiences in both the U.S. and Europe. Up to date it has grossed US$2.3 million and attracted more than 300,000 viewers since its debut in April, becoming the most popular Korean movie to be released in the United States..
