The performance was satisfactory for Lee, who did not eye a medal in the discipline despite having won a silver medal at the Vancouver Olympics in 2010. He has focused his training on the mass start for the Pyeongchang Olympics, but competed in the 5,000-m race because no other Korean athlete was able to do so.

"I am actually quite satisfied with my record, so I leave with confidence for the next races", Lee said. He will skate in the 10,000-m on Thursday, the team pursuit on Sunday, and the mass start next Saturday.

In the figure skating team event, Korea failed to advance to the final after finishing ninth. Out of 10 teams, only the top five finishers in the first round advance. Rankings in the team event are based on countries' total scores across four disciplines.

Choi Da-bin came in sixth in the ladies' single short program with a personal best of 65.73 points.

But ice dancers Min Yu-ra and Alexander Gamelin ranked a disappointing ninth with 51.97 points, about 10 points lower than their personal best. Cha Jun-hwan came sixth in the men's singles, while pair Kim Kyu-eun and Kam Kang-chan came 10th.

Jang Hye-ji and Lee Ki-jeong lost to Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris 8-3 in the seventh and final match of round-robin play in mixed doubles curling. The Korean pair finished sixth with two wins and five losses and failed to advance to the final.

Anna Frolina, a naturalized Korean citizen originally from Russia, finished 32nd out of 87 in the women's 7.5-km sprint in the biathlon. It is the best record ever produced by a Korean in the sport.
