Korea to Adopt Digital Driver's License Next Year

Koreans will be able to use a digital version of their driver's license on their smartphones from October next year, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said Tuesday.

The service is being developed in collaboration with the National Police Agency and the Road Traffic Authority.

It will only be valid initially for use as personal identification.

Separately, the country's three major mobile carriers said they will offer services to their subscribers to register drivers' licenses on their smartphones as substitute IDs when buying liquor or cigarettes at convenience stores or to reissue or renew their licenses.
