Korean dramas on traditional cuisine and medicine win popularity in Vietnam

2005/08/29 Source

Vietnamese are into Korean royal cuisine and traditional medical dramas.

As Korean drama, 'Dae Jang Geum: Jewel in the Palace' had been aired five episodes per week from last January to March on Vietnamese national television (VTV 3), local viewers have been into the TV series.

'Dae Jang Geum' is an extended historical drama set in the sixteenth-century court of the Korean Emperor. It tells the story of a real historical figure, Jang-Geum, a girl who grows up as an apprentice cook in the royal kitchens and rises to prominence within the palace. The affairs of the kitchen and the royal household are depicted as matters of the gravest import; the factional struggles and battles over hierarchy and preferment among the Kitchen Ladies are vicious and at times murderous. In this hostile world, the virtuous Jang-Geum is constantly tested and always prevails.

During its run in Korea the show received over 50% of the ratings share, the highest in Korean television history.

Upon prompt requests by Vietnamese viewers right after the drama ended, the series was broadcast again.

Most of Vietnamese media compliments the lead actress, Lee Young-ae on her performance as 'Jang-Geum' who became the first female personal doctor of the emperor the best chef of the imperial court struggling with adversity throughout her life.

Meanwhile, another drama "Heo Jun" aired in May on the same television channel has been very popular as well.

According to local media, "Heo Jun" withthe story of a celebrated doctor in Joseon Dynasty shows a true virtue of doctor who sets the highest value on saving lives, not pursuing personal reputation and interests.

One of hallyu (Korean wave) expert in Vietnam and reporter of an entertainment magazine points out that Vietnamese viewers are excited over those dramas, 'Dae Jang Geum' and "Heo Jun" because they offer something to think about which is quite different from what existing Korean dramas usually represented such as splendid selection of costumes, fast-paced storytelling or beauty of lead actresses.
