Korean film "Punch" invited to Berlin Film Festival

Korean film "Punch" (Wandeukyi) by director Lee Han has been invited to next year's Berlin International Film Festival, the film's local distributor said Thursday.

The movie will be screened in the "My Generation" section of the 62nd festival for featuring movies for younger children and teens, CJ Entertainment and Media Co. said.

It marks the second Korean film invited to the section following the 2007 movie "Like A Virgin" by director Lee Hae-yeong.

Based on the award-winning, best-selling novel of the same title by Kim Ryeo-reyong, the movie tells the story of a poor and rebellious boy named Wandeuk meeting an oddball teacher and growing up.

The picture starring Yoo Ah-in and Kim Yun-seok has become one of the most-watched Korean films this year, next to the action movie "Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon" and drama "Sunny - 2010".

"Punch" has attracted more than 5.27 million moviegoers since opening in local theaters in October.

The Berlin film festival, scheduled for Feb. 9-19 next year, is one of the world's three major film festivals. (Yonhap)
