Korean Short Films Selected for Washington Film Fest

2006/06/28 | 79 views | Permalink | Source

From June 19 until June 30, Washington DC will host the Asia-European Film Festival. Three Korean short films have been selected to screen at this event: Oh! Beautiful Life (2003), A Vital Activity (2003) and The Weight of Her (2003).

The festival intents to show, discuss and analyze contemporary youths, their life styles and their struggle with forming an identity in a rapidly globalizing world; they have to deal with new world dynamics, and the values and identities of older generations. The festival will look closer at youth cultures in a variety of Asian and European countries and in the end it will address the question if there are many distinctive youth cultures, or do youths around the globe increasingly start to share common traits?

The Korean short Oh! Beautiful Life by KIM In-sook shows a Korean girl distinguishing herself at an interview by rapping as her introduction. Nonetheless, however cheerful she may present herself, she is also troubled. A Vital Activity by OH Jeom-kyeon portrays a busy couple in their early twenties. Without much money to spend, they seek some peace in their busy life. The Weight of Her by acclaimed director Yim Soon-rye is about high school girls who feel pressured to undergo plastic surgery.

Each evening the showing of the films will be followed by a discussion about youth culture and identity as represented in the short films. The discussion will be lead by experts on youth culture from the countries which have films selected at the festival. The short films are from the Asian countries: Korea, China and Japan; and from the European countries: France, Germany and Italy.
